Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the notion of 'innovative learning space', and what this means for developments at Sheffield Hallam (SHU). Recognition of the importance of effective learning spaces is growing rapidly throughout the HE community in the UK and abroad, as patterns of space use on- and off-campus continue to evolve. For example, in response to changing curriculum design, spaces that can support collaborative learning activities are in higher demand in both formal and informal settings. Institutions are keen to understand the implications of this for the short-, medium- and long-term not only in terms of new build and renovation projects, but the potential impact on other areas of curriculum planning and design. 'Innovative learning space' has become a much used phrase throughout the community as conversations take place around what to do with newly constructed and renovated buildings on-campus, and SHU is no exception to this. This paper, however, suggests that the term itself can be the cause of many misunderstandings, and can cloud the issues being discussed. It suggests instead that the focus should be on innovative design and/or use of space, and the innovations in learning, teaching, and assessment (LTA) that this can encourage, rather than suggesting that the space itself has intrinsic innovative qualitites.

What this paper will not do is:

  • talk in-depth about the interplay between the virtual and physical learning environments;
  • talk about emerging 3D virtual worlds (such as Second Life) and their potential as learning spaces within Higher Education;
  • talk in any detail about specialised learning environments, such as Immersive Visualisation Environments.

While the above areas are important to consider when looking at the future of learning spaces, any in-depth discussions of these fall outside the scope of this paper. However, these provide useful topics for the group to consider at a later date.
